The smoother and lighter type is called pahoehoe and the darker patches are aa (much rougher and it's said that is what the ancient hawaiians said when they walked on it with bare feet!)

  • Me, awfully close to the fresh pahoehoe lava flow.  The lava is about 2000 degrees and VERY hot.  I could only stay this close for a few seconds before moving away.
